Readings #9 : The lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes

Cover of The Lesbian’s guide to catholic school from Sonora Reyes. This is an illustration of Yamilet, in her private high school uniform, with braided hair, large gold hoops and makeup. She is surrounded by roses. The style of illustration suggests a mixture of Catholic religious iconography and comics.

Yamilet Flores, a young Mexican-American teenager, is outed by her former best friend and crush. So she changes school and finds herself in a catholic, white, rich high school, and she promises to not fall in love again and look straight. Her encounter with Bo, the only openly queer girl of her high school, throws a wrench in her resolve 👀

It’s cute, quick to read and the tone is great. I really like the relationship between Yamilet and her brother Cesar.

I have a few reservations about the character of the mother, who is a bit of a caricature, and I find her development a bit rushed, but I recommend it all the same :)

TW : homophobia, racism, suicidal ideation (at some length towards the end)
