In my history in June 2024
I'll be honest, it's been difficult this month to share anything other than articles and videos warning of the dangers of fascism, or analysing the total and utter mess France has been since the dissolution.
I did my best to vary the content, and to offer some light-hearted reading and videos in between political content, so that it's not all a long list of depressing, dooming content.
In any case, I strongly encourage you to go out and vote Nouveau Front Populaire tomorrow, and to do the same again next Sunday if you have the chance in your constituency. The stakes are too high. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for all those who are directly and daily affected by racism, anti-semitism, Islamophobia, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, psychophobia and capitalism.
Let's start with my ‘top 10’, the gems you shouldn't miss if you don't have the time to read everything!
#1
Music – I absolutely love the Floppotron ♥#2
Climate change – Climate zones, a very well thought-out dataviz that shows the 5 major climate categories, their 4 sub-categories, and the 30 possible combinations in the Köppen Classification, as well as the foreseeable evolution of 70 major cities between now and 2070.If you want to get a concrete idea of the effects of global warming, it's very interesting. And depressing. But interesting.
#3
Politics – Democracy : the beggining of the end, yet another very good Rhinocéros episode.#4
Popculture – Excellent video from Bolchegeek on fantasy, and why Game of Thrones is Dallas with dragons, but not necessarily in the way you'd think. I'd recommend all Bolchegeek's videos at L'Huma, they're always interesting!#5
Knitting – I found some very good sweater patterns I'd like to knit in the next few months:#6
) Privacy – Enquête du téléphone (Litt. Telephone investigation). A woman has just been taken into custody. Inspect her phone to find out why she was arrested. It's short, you can play directly in your browser, and it's sadly topical.#7
Economy – Will the programme of the Nouveau Front Populaire ‘lead the country to ruin’? In the face of the right-wing and far-right media offensive, in the face of lies, exaggerations and FUD, it is important to take the time to look calmly at the facts, and to listen to the competent people. Every one of Michaël Zemmour's contributions is a real pleasure to watch: he puts things into context; he explains things calmly; he sources things; he argues things.#8
Mystery – I recently came across one of my favourite Internet stories, ✨ The case of the 500-mile email ✨#9
Masculinism – Mascus : Infiltration chez les hommes qui détestent les femmes (litt. Masculinists : Infiltrating men who hate women) is a very good documentary. Thanks Renaud!#10
Music – That is by no means a recent discovery, but this show can turn the shittiest day into a great time (and it does at least twice a week, if I'm being honest), and that's exactly what we need right now.- DIY – In the series of absolutely useless but totally fascinating DIY projects, I ask for the invisible PC:
- Bricolage bis – Or, in a completely different vein, the perfect PC for people like me who are 50% coffee:
- Cooking – Yet another great recipe on NYT Cooking, mushroom stroganoff. It's vegetarian, and easy to veganize.
- Radio – If you missed Waly Dia excellent bit on June 23, catch it up, it's perfect.
« "You can not tell them they're racists, or they…" Or they'll what? Vote RN? Spoiler: They're already doing it, what are you afraid of? That they'll push the ballot harder in the urn? »
- Corruption – How we bought a "label E" for our uninsulated flat, Exclusif / Low Income Housing: We filmed a corruption network with hidden cameras... Reports on specific examples of corruption in very specific areas have abounded in recent weeks, and beyond the individual cases, they highlight a rampant problem. The rise of corruption in France is really a sign that things are going very badly, and it's a signal that shouldn't be ignored.
- Politics – The latest episode of La France a peur (litt. France is afraid) on Blast began with an hour-long interview with Johann Chapoutot, which was very interesting, and ended with a very good question from Salomé Saqué:
« What is the real risk of tipping over into a fascist regime, bearing in mind that it's an expression that's used a lot on the left, ‘the RN are fascists’, but in concrete terms, if we're intellectually serious, what is the real risk of us moving into this other dimension in France? »
I extracted the answer in this toot, I'm linking to it because I didn't find a way to embed it directly here. - Urbanism – what if we put the pedestrian back in the middle of the village? Another great article on the subject from The Conversation!
- Startup – I'd completely missed out on the Lambda School, and I really recommend you read this long piece if you have too.
- Vegetarism – A short video to help you choose meat and dairy alternatives. Nothing new, still useful.
- Counsil Estate / Projects – ‘Here we don't often talk politics, but we're dying of it’, another excellent video by Ibrahim Benaissa, who is behind the excellent Gens de France (litt. People from France) series on Blast.
- Geography – How many cities do you now in metropolitan France? Do the test. I stopped at 355 cities, with 30,34 % of the population 😊
- Cooking – You like msemen? here's a recipe to make it yourself. You don't know what msemen are? Try some, it's really good!
- Tuto – Clément Viktorovitch offers a tutorial to recognize fascism, even in it's Sunday clothes.
- Action – Jackie Chan - How to Do Action Comedy, great video on why Jackie Chan is the king of action comedy, and why american movies that try to do the same don't really work.
- History – I like Nota Bene a lot, and this video is convincing me further.
- Security – Here's a small game to play in your browser. Beware, if you care about security, it will make you cringe.
- Security bis – Now you found every password in the previous game, here is another one where you can generate a secure password… and that adds a new constraint every time you fullfil one.
- Architecture – Freddie Mamani does beautiful things:
